RIDGEONS PREMIER DIVISION - SATURDAY DECEMBER 11th
BRANTHAM ATHLETIC 2 KIRKLEY & PAKEFIELD 1
With three of the regular back four men missing we knew it would be a hard match against high riding Kirkley & Pakefield. However, it was us who ran out winners, picking up three valuable league points that saw us move off the bottom of the table. We started the better side going forward and within minutes Marc Lowe saw a shot on the run turned round for a corner by the Kirkley keeper. Simon Mann latched onto a good through ball and sent in a fierce shot that beat the keeper but went just wide. Kirkley started to get more into the game and a good move ended with Crisp hitting a hard shot from close range but the Brantham keeper,Ross Welton was equal to the shot and made a top class save. We started to push men forward again and a move that involved both David Grimwood and Simon Mann saw the ball played through to Ollie Mann who sent in a fierce shot from just outside the area that the Kirkley keeper did well to turn round for a corner. We finally made the pressure count in the 41st minute. A good move saw the ball put into the area and Marc Lowe rose like the proverbial salmon to head the ball home into the roof of the net. 1-0.
The second half started with Kirkley looking determined to pull a goal back and Crisp saw a hard shot well taken by Welton in our goal. Play tended to become a bit scrappy at this stage with both sides having chances but neither able to make them count. The livewire Lee Grimwood was causing Kirkley a lot of problems with his direct running and superb control of the football and at times they did not seem to know how to stop him. Kirkley drew level after a player had been fouled outside our area. Harvey Cooper lined the kick up and sent in a shot hard and low that flew into the goal leaving the unsighted Brantham custodian Welton no chance at all. 1-1. Kirkley started to push men up front and had a couple of good chances before they were reduced to ten men. Midfield general David Grimwood was dumped unceremoniously on the ground by a hard tackle with Kirkley's Potter being the cuplrit who then seemed to get involved in a tangle of bodies around David. The referee consulted his assistants before sending Potter off. Kirkley were still playing some good football but it was us who looked that bit more dangerous on the break. A good move saw the ball played through to Ollie Mann who outstripped a defender before slotting home in style.Ollie's joy was short lived as the linesman had his flagup for offside against another Brantham player, despite the fact that he had not been involved when the ball hit the back of the net! Kirkley were then a tad unlucky when a forward sent in a great shot from just inside the area, the ball ran along the goal line and hit the far post amnd came straight back out again-phew!!( much to our relief I might add!). We finally made sure of all three points when Lee Grimwood, once again tormented his marker, and put a great ball into the area and Kirkley's Grint, trying to clear the ball, could only hit it into his own net past his somewhat startled goalkeeper!. A good result and the team, with several positional changes did well ,and nice to see goalkeeper Ryan Bedingfield back at the club after his bad injury a while back at Cambridge.
